Africa!

The week of the Kids' Lit Quiz world final at last.

The teams held their welcome dinner on Sunday night and a few parents got together at a different venue to also celebrate the start of the world finals.

Getting together has not been easy - some of the Canadian team were delayed for 24 hours, members of the US and Australian teams waited on the tarmac after boarding for 4 and a half and 2 hours respectively, part of the US team was also delayed and arrived a day later than anticipated.

Last night, the teams enjoy a mayoral reception dinner hosted by the Deputy Mayor of Durban while their families had dinner at an Indian restaurant.  Did you know there are more people of Indian descent living in Durban  than in any other city outside India?

Yesterday, we visited the Gateway shopping mall - the largest in Africa, I'm told.  In a bookshop there, we bought a few books with African themes or written by African authors, including Spud - The Madness Continues by John van de Ruit.  The film based on this book  opened in Durban last week so a visit to the movies is also on the agenda - if we have time during this action-packed week.  Our family all enjoyed the first Spud movie so this could be an unexpected treat.

But first, the Kids' Lit Quiz World Final 2013 - tomorrow at 1.30 pm, Durban Girls School, Durban, South Africa.  Entry is FREE.

For an insider's look at the Australian team's world final experience, please have a look at their blog.

Also, author Rachel Morgan will be there tomorrow.  She's excited too!  Read her blog here.

A braai (barbeque) tonight and an early night for the teams so they can be well rested for their big day tomorrow.  Good luck to all the teams (but a little extra luck - with love - to the Aussie team from your parents and friends.)
